This post is brought you to you buy G-d's gift to crafters. ALEENE'S ORIGINAL TACKY GLUE! You can basically pick this stuff up anywhere. And it's amazing. And the entire featured project here.. is basically constructed using tacky glue...
So. I have this box. It did not come with a lid... I got it for free on craigslist. It's a not a shitty box, though. It's like.. real wood - not particle board or pressed wood. It's heavy. It's a nice box. So, I really really wanted to make a lid for it. The major problem as you might be able to see is that the box has a... I would describe it as a lip. Idk what it's called. but the lid of the box has to work around it
So I bought some cheap wood from Joann to build a lid because I had this vision of a pin cushion topped lid for the box (because obviously it's going to be a sewing box!!)
I cut two pieces of the thin board for the lid.. and glued it together and covered both sides with fabric to help hold them together.
These are the two fabrics I picked for the pieces. I wasn't going to be able to stain the wood the correct color so I figured I would just roll the side pieces in fabric instead. As you can see I considered painting them with nail polish and that was bust hahaha
I guess I don't have a picture of it specifically happening, but the thing boards kinda buckled because of the glue.. NICE. So I ended up cutting up the box from a little sewing caddy (also free haha) which I'm actually using for hair stuff. Anywho. I cut two pieces of cardboard and glued them on each side of the thing boards. I binder clipped them together for a while to dry. It seems to have made a huge difference. The lid was immediate sturdier and flatter lol yayy
I added some fabric over the back... a little attention to detail thing to make it look a lot better. I laid out the side pieces and put a thick layer of glue over them then carefully set the lid onto them.. It seems to have worked lol
I'm really excited to say that it looks REALLY good. I'm so happy. I think I'm going to fill the inside of the box with buttons (my buttons are all in two jars) and use the top for a pin cushion. I think I'm gonna layer some more glue all over the thing. I really wish I had a staple gun but I don't. wwaaaahhhhh. Hopefully it will all hold together. I love it. :D Ssoo happy it turned out nice
